About the Clinic

For 40 years Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik, through its legal aid clinic in Iqaluit, has focused on public legal education, law reform and client representation. Today, 8 criminal law lawyers, 3 family law lawyers, 1 poverty law lawyer, 2 full time Iqaluit Inuit court workers and Inuit Court Workers in 12 Baffin Communities continue the work of the last 40 years ensuring that access to justice remains at the forefront in Nunavut.

Located in building 1104B in the Inuksugait Plaza in Iqaluit, Maliiganik Tukisiinakvik’s office is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m to 5 p.m (closed over the lunch hour).

Whether you have been arrested, had involvement with family services, lost your job or been threatened with eviction from your home, the lawyers, court workers and administrative staff at Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik can provide you with free, timely information and possible representation as you make your way through the justice system.

Legal Aid Application Process

To qualify for legal aid, you must fill out an application with a court worker in your nearest regional clinic. The worker will ask you to provide details on what you are looking for help with, as well as two pieces of ID and two current pay stubs. If you aren’t working, you may be asked for proof of income support, the last two years of your CRA Notice of Assessment, or anything else to provide your financial position.
