Legal Services for Nunavummiut

Although we receive public funding, Nunavut Legal Aid is not a government department. As a public agency, we operate independently from the Government of Nunavut.

About Us

The Legal Services Board of Nunavut (LSB) was incorporated in July 2000, pursuant to section 3(1) of the Legal Services Act, R.S.N.W.T. 1988, c-14.  As the territory’s legal aid plan, LSB is responsible for providing legal services to financially eligible Nunavummiut in the areas of criminal, family and civil law.

MEET US IN PERSON

Our Regional Clinics

LSB’s regional legal aid clinics are located in Cambridge Bay (Kitikmeot Law Centre), Rankin Inlet (Kivalliq Legal Services), and Iqaluit (Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik). Each clinic is staffed by a complement of family and criminal lawyers, administrative support, and court workers. Court workers are based both within the clinics and in the communities.

Kivalliq Legal Services

Kivalliq Legal Services formerly Keewatin Legal Services provides legal aid services to residents of the Kivalliq region. The clinic offers assistance with various legal matters, such as criminal law, family law, and other legal issues. The organization aims to provide access to justice for those who may not be able to afford legal representation otherwise.

Maliiganik Tukisiinakvik Legal Services

Maliignaik Tukisiiniarvik has been operating in Iqaluit since 1974. At that time and until Nunavut separated from the NWT, it was the only legal service for Nunavummiut. Since then, the clinic has grown to include many lawyers in criminal, family, and civil practice. There are also a number of Inuktut-speaking front-line staff who help clients by phone, email, or appointment. Additional services like commissioner of oaths and notary service are available by appointment.
