Summary – Module 1

Module 1: Introduction to Nunavut’s Legal System offers an insightful overview of Nunavut’s legal landscape.

Legal Services Board (LSB): We examined the LSB’s essential role in ensuring access to justice, including its structure, history, and key functions like legal representation, public legal education, and duty counsel services.
Nunavut Court of Justice (NCJ): The module highlighted the distinctive aspects of the NCJ, including its unified court system and the challenges posed by Nunavut’s vast geography and cultural diversity.
Roles of Lawyers: We discussed the varied responsibilities of lawyers in Nunavut, such as providing legal representation, offering advice, and engaging with the community.
History of Nunavut’s Legal System: The module traced the historical developments that led to the establishment of Nunavut’s legal framework, focusing on the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the evolution of governance structures that promote Inuit self-governance and cultural recognition.
